Ask what the free year actually requires and this ranking explains itself. It is free only when Northwest also handles your formation; ordered by itself, agent service runs $125 for the year. The $100 rate needs five state registrations or more, so a business that exists only in South Carolina will never qualify for it. Budget $125, annually, for as long as you stay. Second place is still earned, though. Northwest prints its prices where buyers can read them, puts real staff on the phone, and protected client address privacy for years before the rest of this industry worked out that privacy sells.

3. BetterLegal

Ninety dollars a year is the lowest published renewal on this page, and we confirmed it in the company's own wording during our July 2026 sweep. Then ask what the first year costs and the answer is not written anywhere we could find. That gap is the whole reason a documented $99 finishes above an undocumented $90 in this order. If you reach BetterLegal's checkout and the opening figure suits you, take it. Nobody paying $90 for South Carolina agent service is being taken advantage of.

4. Rocket Lawyer

A flat $125 a year, identical at every tier of membership, with no introductory rate scheduled to expire on you later. Credit where it is owed, because that is unusually disciplined for this category. The issue is fit rather than cost. What the company really sells is a legal subscription with agent service hanging off the side of it, so the value turns on whether you will actually use the contract templates and the attorney calls. If a South Carolina address and a quick scan is the entire requirement, you are renting a whole toolkit for the sake of one tool.

Read the pricing twice on this one. Standalone agent service is $99 plus state fees for your first year, then $199 for every year after that. Only the second number belongs in your planning, because you will spend far more years renewing than starting. The platform genuinely is well built, and nothing here disputes that. Well built costs an extra hundred dollars a year against a flat $99, and it costs it repeatedly.

6. Bizee (formerly Incfile)

The company plenty of owners still call Incfile. Form through Bizee and agent coverage arrives free for somewhere between three and twelve months, depending on which package you bought. If Bizee was going to file your paperwork anyway, that is worth having. Write the expiry date down the same day you sign, because the standalone rate takes over at $149 a year when the bundle runs out, and nothing about a free service ever reminds you it was temporary.

7. LegalZoom

$249 every year, on automatic renewal, and our July 2026 sweep located nothing that looked like an opening discount. That is the most expensive flat rate here, and it buys the most familiar name in the category. It does not buy you anything extra from South Carolina. The state holds a $249 agent and a $90 agent to identical duties: qualify under § 33-44-108, stay reachable at a South Carolina street address, pass along what arrives without delay. The premium is paying for recognition rather than for compliance.

8. Swyft Filings

That $149 is a quarterly charge, not a yearly one. Multiply it across twelve months and the total sits near $596, the highest effective cost anybody on this list charges, with no introductory rate we could find to blunt it. Splitting a bill into quarters is a reliable way of making a large annual number look like four small ones. A year of Swyft costs roughly what six years of our service costs.

9. Inc Authority

The first year is free. The second year is a mystery. In July 2026 we searched their help pages, their package listings, and the front of the site, and no renewal figure appears in any of it, which usually means it shows up at checkout or comes out of a sales call. A list that ranks companies by what they publish has to put a company that publishes nothing at the end. The blank space is the review.

South Carolina Has No LLC Annual Report, and Some Vendors Sell One Anyway

Start with the state's headline, because it is a good one. Standard South Carolina LLCs file no annual report with the Secretary of State and pay that office nothing from one year to the next. Title 33, Chapter 44 of the state code never created the requirement in the first place. Keep your default tax treatment, partnership for a multi-member company or disregarded entity for a single-member one, and there is no yearly form and no yearly fee to think about.

Be precise about the exception, which is real but narrow. Pick corporate tax treatment for your company and the filing obligation moves over to the South Carolina Department of Revenue, which folds the report into the corporate return as Schedule D on Form SC1120 or on Form SC1120S, after a single CL-1 initial report when you first register. All of that follows from a tax election you had to affirmatively make. The large majority of owners here never make it.

Which brings us to a specific upsell. Several national platforms advertise South Carolina annual report filing as a recurring add-on service. For a default-taxed LLC there is no report to file, so the money buys the preparation of a document that does not exist. Ask any vendor quoting you that service to name the form it intends to file. Now notice the flip side, because it cuts toward hiring carefully rather than away from it. In a state that invoices you every year, the invoice doubles as an annual prompt to look at who your agent is. South Carolina sends no such prompt. An agent who has lapsed, relocated, or stopped answering can therefore sit in your record untouched for years while you carry on assuming the arrangement still works. Less paperwork makes agent reliability more important here, not less.

The Designated Office Is a Second Requirement, Not a Synonym

Most states name a registered agent and a registered office in the same breath and mean roughly one thing. South Carolina asks for a designated office located inside the state, and that office is not required to be anywhere you actually conduct business, and it asks separately for an agent for service of process. Two obligations, both continuous, both sitting in § 33-44-108.

The statute recognizes four kinds of eligible agent: a resident individual, a domestic corporation, another limited liability company, or an authorized foreign corporation or company. The word carrying the weight is "another". Your own LLC is not permitted to name itself. A member who lives in the state can serve in a personal capacity, which costs nothing, and which also parks a personal address on a public state record and commits that person to being findable there all day, every business day.

Forming something new? Both requirements get named up front in your Articles of Organization, which South Carolina statute prices at $110. File through the state's Business Entities Online portal and a processing fee is added inside the checkout flow, so the online total finishes a little above the statutory amount.
